Researchers cracked satellite phone encryption

Security researchers in Germany cracked two encryption standards used for protecting satellite phone signals, giving the ability to eavesdrop on calls over an entire continent.

Researchers at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany cracked the encryption algorithms , known as GMR-1 and GMR-2, are standards used across satellite phone operators, including Thuraya, a leading providers. Their technology is widely used in the Middle East and Africa, including in some military applications.

"We were able to completely reverse engineer the encryption algorithms employed," The Daily Telegraph quoted Benedikt Driessen and Ralf Hund of the university as saying, "Don't Trust Satellite Phones".

According to the Telegraph report, the equipment and software needed to intercept and decrypt satellite phone calls from hundreds of thousands of users would cost as little as $2,000.

The demo takes up to half-an-hour to decipher a call, but a more powerful computer would allow eavesdropping in real time, Mr Driessen said.

The Ministry of Defence has said the crack of the A5-GMR-1 and A5-GMR-2 encryption algorithms will not affect military operations.

"All military users of mobile satellite communication systems are aware of the potential threats to such systems and are briefed explicitly that they are only authorised to pass unclassified information (both voice and data) over these systems," an MoD spokeswoman said in an email statement. "Protected information is never sent over an unclassified system, unless it is being employed in conjunction with an accredited secure device."

Security Breach on DreamHosts , Shell/FTP Password may compromised

DreamHost detect some unauthorized activity within one of their database. They notified their customers about the security breach and recommends them to change their FTP/shell access passwords, also email passwords.

"Our security systems detected the potential breach this morning and we immediately took the defensive precaution of expiring and resetting all FTP/shell access passwords for all DreamHost customers and their users." said in the official email notification.

Following the security breach, DreamHost start to change the customers' FTP/shell passwords for security purpose. Customers should login into their cpanel and change their passwords for FTP/shell.

According to their report, Only FTP password may have compromised but there is no unauthorized access to cpanel or email passwords.

3 Palos Verdes High students busted for hacking computers, changing Grade

Three Palos Verdes High school students have been arrested on suspicion of hacking school computer, changed grades, stole test question paper and make money by selling answers to their classmates.

They broke into classrooms late at night on the Palos Verdes Estates campus to steal hard copies of tests from teachers' desks"The report from Daily Breeze says.

They insert the hardware Keylogger to the computers of four teachers, then they login to the the central files of the school network using the captured passwords. Then, they start to increase their grade bit by bit to get A grade.

Also, they allegedly solved the stolen questions papers and sell the answers.
This scheme was discovered when a student reported about the offer to administrators .

Two students implicated in this activity have already been recommended for expulsion. One of these students was a transfer from Peninsula High School. other students have been suspended for receiving stolen tests and information..

Reuters reports that VeriSign Inc, the company in charge of delivering people safely to more than half the world's websites, has been hacked repeatedly .

VeriSign isn't saying exactly what is missing, they believes that attack was didn't breach the Domain Name System (DNS) servers, which ensures people land at the right IP address when you type the URL such as google.com.

The Company’s information security group was aware of the attacks shortly after the time of their occurrence and the group implemented remedial measures designed to mitigate the attacks and to detect and thwart similar additional attacks,” the 10-Q filing reads.

“However, given the nature of such attacks, we cannot assure that our remedial actions will be sufficient to thwart future attacks or prevent the future loss of information. In addition, although the Company is unaware of any situation in which possibly exfiltrated information has been used, we are unable to assure that such information was not or could not be used in the future.”

Symantec Corp bought Verisign’s SSL certificate division in the summer of 2010 for $1.28bn. Symantec spokeswoman Nicole Kenyon said "there is no indication that the 2010 corporate network security breach mentioned by VeriSign Inc was related to the acquired SSL product production systems."

Romanian police have arrested a man believed to be TinKode, the notorious hacker responsible for several daring, high-profile cyberattacks, including last year's breach of NASA's servers, Royal Navy,MySQL.com. The 20-year-old man, named as Razvan Manole Cernaianu, allegedly attacked Pentagon and NASA computer systems, revealed security holes, and published information about SQL injection vulnerabilities he had discovered, the Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorist (DIICOT) said in a press Release.


He also posted a video on his blog demonstrating an attack he carried out against the U.S. government, and created and offered for sale a computer program used to hack Web sites. Through his exploits, Cernaianu blocked access to systems and seriously disabled their proper functioning, authorities said.


Currently, Cernăianu is being taken to Bucharest for questioning and he is charged with breaching a computing system without authorization, unauthorized transfer of data from a computing system, and the disruption of a computing system. Romanian authorities said the FBI and NASA took part in the investigation.
